What insurance does a Texas gas station or convenience store need?
A Texas gas station or convenience store typically needs property coverage for the store, canopy, pumps and signs; general liability; storage tank pollution liability to meet federal and TCEQ financial-responsibility rules; liquor liability if it sells beer or wine; crime coverage for cash and lottery funds; and spoilage and equipment breakdown for coolers.

Risks & Coverage
What can go wrong at a Texas gas station or convenience store, and the coverage to consider.
- 01
Underground Storage Tanks
Federal and Texas (TCEQ) rules require most tank owners to prove financial responsibility for leak cleanup and third-party damage. A standard property or liability policy won't cover it; a storage-tank pollution policy is designed to.
Coverage to ConsiderStorage tank pollution liability
- 02
Canopy & Sign Damage
Canopies catch wind and hail first. They need to be scheduled with correct values, and freestanding price signs need their own limit.
Coverage to ConsiderCanopy, pumps and signs scheduled at replacement cost
- 03
Robbery & Employee Theft
Cash, lottery funds and inventory are targets. Crime coverage can cover money and stock, inside and outside the store.
Coverage to ConsiderCrime: money, securities, lottery funds, robbery and employee theft
- 04
Beer & Wine Sales
Texas law can hold a seller liable for alcohol sold to someone who then causes harm. General liability policies exclude this for businesses that sell alcohol; liquor liability is written for this exposure.
Coverage to ConsiderLiquor liability
- 05
Cooler & Freezer Failure
A power outage or compressor failure can spoil a full walk-in overnight. Spoilage and equipment breakdown coverage can pay for it, subject to the policy.

Questions
Gas Stations & C-Stores: common questions.
Do I need pollution insurance for my tanks?
In most cases yes. Owners and operators of petroleum underground storage tanks must show financial responsibility for leaks, and a storage-tank pollution liability policy is the common way to meet that requirement. It's separate from your property and liability policies.
I lease the store — what do I need?
Tenants usually insure their own stock, equipment, liability, liquor liability and crime, and the lease may require more. We read the lease and quote exactly what it requires, plus what protects you.
Can you insure a store with past claims?
Usually, yes. We work with standard carriers and specialty (surplus lines) markets, and we explain the claims history and the fixes you made so underwriters price the store as it is today.
