Catastrophe
Definition
A catastrophe, or CAT, is a single event, such as a hurricane, hailstorm, freeze or wildfire, that causes large insured losses across many policyholders. Catastrophes drive deductibles, pricing and claim delays, and some policy terms apply only to them.
In Plain English
Insurers manage catastrophe risk with special deductibles, such as a named storm deductible, and by buying reinsurance. After a major event, claim volume spikes, adjusters are stretched and repairs take longer.
Catastrophes can also change the market. Heavy losses can reduce capacity and raise prices for property in the affected region. Calmer years can lead to softer pricing.
For owners, preparation matters most: current photos and documents, a list of emergency contractors, and a plan to prevent further damage after the event.

Example
Hypothetical: a hailstorm damages roofs across a metro area. An owner with five strip centers files claims on all of them the same week. Because of the claim volume, inspections take several weeks, so the owner tarps damaged roofs and documents everything while waiting.
Why It Matters for Texas Property Owners
Texas faces hail, hurricanes, freezes and wildfires. During Winter Storm Uri (Feb 11–19, 2021), commercial property was about 10% of claims but about 53% of incurred losses, per TDI. Texas also had more major hail events than any other state in 2025. When a weather catastrophe is declared, Texas prompt-payment deadlines can be extended by 15 days.
What to Watch For
- Know which deductibles apply to catastrophe events on your policy.
- Keep current photos, building records and policy copies stored off-site.
- Report claims quickly and take reasonable steps to prevent more damage.
- Track your claim's timeline under Texas prompt payment rules.
