TCEQ (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality)
Definition
TCEQ, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, is the state's environmental regulator. For property owners, it matters most for petroleum storage tanks at gas stations, contamination cleanups, and environmental permits. It also administers the financial assurance rules that require tank owners to prove they can pay for leaks.
In Plain English
Gas station and convenience store owners deal with TCEQ through the petroleum storage tank program. It covers tank registration, leak detection, inspections and financial assurance, which is often met with storage tank liability insurance.
TCEQ also oversees cleanup of contaminated sites. Buyers and lenders often order an environmental site assessment that checks TCEQ records for past leaks or violations at and near a property.
Insurers may ask for TCEQ registration details, compliance history and tank information when quoting a fuel-selling property.

Why It Matters for Texas Property Owners
TCEQ administers the federal underground storage tank rules in Texas through its own regulations, including 30 TAC Chapter 37, Subchapter I for financial assurance.
